SNGCE Best Practices

Best Practice-1:

FAB LAB for Innovation and Product Development

SNGCE Fab-Lab is a technical prototyping platform for innovations and inventions and also acts as a facility for providing stimulus for local entrepreneurship. It is a means to connect our campus community with a global community of learners, educators, researchers and innovators. The Fab-Lab is a collaborative initiative of Kerala Start-up Mission at a total cost of Rs 40 lakhs, one of the very few such facilities in the state. Some of the latest equipment available for the students to work out their ideas include; Shop Bot (Desktop CNC machine), Epilog laser cutter, 3-D printer, Vinyl cutter, Electronic section, molding and casting section.

Many students from different engineering departments of the College have been using the facility to experiment their ideas under the supervision of teachers. Two such devices developed by the students are:  Self stabilizing spoon and Multipurpose Intelligence Canister. The former, being conceived and developed by three students from the Electronics and Communication Engineering department, assists people suffering from Parkinson’s disease to eat food independently. The latter is an intelligent container, designed to track the amount of commodity inside it and alerts the user when the quantity depletes below a particular level. The Fab-lab is an effective tool to encourage students to develop new ideas and create new devices and tools.

Best Practice-2:

'One Home One Women Entrepreneur’ and

Promotion of Rural Industry based on Organic Food Supplements

In Collaboration With
Aikaranad Grama Panchayat, Ernakulam District, Kerala

The major objective of this program is to foster the entrepreneurship aptitude and skills among the students and use the same to train rural population, especially women to venture into business startups. This will improve the societal skills of the students and empower the women in rural areas by enabling them to open their own start-ups and businesses. Students from the departments of Management, Engineering and Humanities participated in this venture. Every academic year, a fresh set of students and interested women entrepreneurs participate in the project. In the year 2022-23, 14 of the 25 women entrepreneurs who were trained have successfully implemented their business ideas. The project helped our students to get experience in resolving the challenges of setting up business startups. This in turn, boosted their self-confidence, communication and coordination skills. In this connection, our students have undergone a unique internship program on ‘Production of organic food supplementary products’ in association with the industry partner ‘Green Signature Organics Pvt. Ltd. Kochi to gain experience which could be shared with prospective entrepreneurs. In the coming years the college will further strengthen this initiative by reaching out to more neighboring panchayats, assisting the community in enhancing the quality of life by helping them to start small and medium enterprises using locally available resources. Socially relevant initiatives of this type in which our students are the key players and partial beneficiaries, will continue to be the priority of SNGCE and will stand out among our ‘best practices’.
